Peggy Brethauer Obituary

In Loving Memory of Peggy Joan (Overman) Brethauer, 84, of Reynoldsville, known affectionately to her community as “PJ”, passed away at home on Saturday, January 31, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, honesty, and a life lived at full speed.

She was born in Reynoldsville on July 9, 1941, a daughter of the late Howard Roland Overman and Helen Virginia (Coyne) Overman.

On December 23, 1976, she married Clyde Lewis Brethauer.  They enjoyed thirty-two years together, and she had fond memories of riding motorcycles with Clyde. She enjoyed every day and every adventure spent with Clyde.  He preceded her in death on their anniversary in 2008.

Peggy thrived on being involved in her community, she volunteered at the Foundry, she was a member of the American Legion and Eagles in Reynoldsville, where she served on the board of trustees and in various roles.  She also enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Society.

“PJ” was the definition of vivacious. She was a woman who simply loved the company of others and was “always on the go.” Whether she was embarking on bus tours with her favorite travel companions or heading out for a night of dancing, she embraced every moment with high energy.  She was a staple at the local “Music in the park” events, always finding joy in the rhythm of the community.

For her children and grandchildren, she was more than just a matriarch; she was their constant.  She was “always there” providing a foundation of support- often delivered with the famous “Overman trait.”  PJ didn’t sugarcoat the truth: she told you exactly like it was if she felt you needed to hear it.  This candid, “tell-it-like-it-is” spirit was a bond she shared with her beloved Aunt Tom, who was a steady and significant presence throughout her life.

Her home was the epicenter of celebration.  Many will fondly remember the legendary July 4th and Christmas Eve parties she hosted, as well as the countless nights spent around the table playing cards with her great circle of dear friends.

In her final months, PJ found a simple, sweet way to respond to the outpouring of love from her family.  Whenever a phone call ended with an “I love you.” her signature reply was quick and classic, “Ditto.”

Though she will be missed beyond measure, her spirit remains in every card game played, every song heard in the park and every honest word spoken.

She is survived by four children, Robert Loughridge of Huntingdon, Donna (Mark) Neely of Allentown, Sharon (John “Red”) Coyne of Pittsburgh, Tracy (Gary) Michaels of West Mifflin, son in-law Steve Petho of Pittsburgh; grandchildren, Amber Scheetz, Jared Scheetz and Cody Dugas, Jessica Petho, Chelsea Petho, Amanda Loughridge, Cory Michaels, Alyssa Michaels, and Christopher Brethauer; great grandchildren, Lucia Scheetz, Demie, Olivia and Dominic Dugas, Ellie Chamberlain, Sophia Brown, Suzie, Sophia and Emma Michaels, Brendan, Gavin, Knox and Quinn Brethauer.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband Clyde, two sons, Thomas W. Loughridge and Robert Brethauer; daughter, Kim Petho; one sister, Nancy Hulick.
